Fairness in Subcontractor Relationships [Real Estate Dev #58]

Fairness in Subcontractor Relationships [Real Estate Dev #58]

Scripture: “You shall not oppress your neighbor or rob him. The wages of a hired worker shall not remain with you all night until the morning.” — Leviticus 19:13 (ESV)

Devotional

Subcontractors are essential to every development project. Yet they’re often under immense pressure—tight margins, fluctuating schedules, unclear scopes, and delayed payments. Leviticus 19:13 commands us not to withhold wages or exploit labor. As a Christian developer, your responsibility includes protecting the dignity and livelihood of those who help you build.

It’s not just about legal compliance—it’s about biblical justice. Fair pay, clear expectations, and prompt communication reflect the heart of God. When you treat subcontractors with respect, listen to their concerns, and value their work, you communicate that people matter more than profit.

Sometimes the pressure of a delayed closing or unexpected cost tempts you to delay payment or shift blame. But integrity means you honor your word, even when it pinches. Your subcontractors may not share your faith, but your faithfulness can leave a powerful witness. A developer known for fairness becomes a beacon in an often transactional industry.

You build more than buildings—you build relationships. Let fairness be a non-negotiable standard in every vendor interaction.

Reflection Questions:

  • Have I delayed or diminished what I owe someone out of convenience?

  • How can I ensure subcontractors are treated fairly and respectfully on my projects?

  • What would justice and compassion look like in my leadership this week?

Prayer

Lord, help me honor every person I work with—especially those who build behind the scenes. Let my treatment of others reflect Your justice and mercy. May I never value a dollar above a person. Amen.
