Grief and Loss at Work [TDPOW #59]

Scripture: Psalm 34:18 — “The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit.”

Devotional

Work can be a place of deep loss—losing a job, a major client, a long-term project, a trusted leader, or even a coworker or friend. Sometimes grief shows up as sadness; other times it appears as numbness, confusion, or anger. These emotions can make it hard to focus or function.

God does not step back from you in grief; He draws near. He is “near to the brokenhearted” and present in the conference room, the job site, or the quiet drive home. He invites you to bring your sorrow and confusion to Him—not to pretend you’re okay when you’re not.

In seasons of loss, your work may feel heavier or strangely hollow. Give yourself grace. God is patient. Over time, He can use grief to deepen your compassion, reorder your priorities, and anchor your hope more firmly in eternity. You don’t have to rush the process; you simply need to walk it with Him.

Reflection Questions:

  1. What loss—recent or past—still affects how you experience work?

  2. Have you invited God into that grief, or have you tried to carry it alone?

  3. How can you show Christlike compassion to others at work who are grieving?

Prayer

Lord, thank You for being near to the brokenhearted. You know the losses I carry. Meet me in my grief, comfort my heart, and use this season to draw me closer to You. Help me bring Your comfort to others as well. Amen.
