The Strain of Balancing Work and Life [TDPOW #74]

Listen to devotional here.

Scripture: Matthew 11:28 — “Come to Me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.”

Devotional

Balancing work with family, church, friendships, rest, and personal health can feel impossible. Many days, you may feel like you’re failing somewhere—at work, at home, or inside your own soul. The strain can lead to guilt, exhaustion, and a constant sense of being behind.

Jesus’ invitation is simple and profound: “Come to Me.” He doesn’t start with a new system or schedule, but with Himself. Rest is not only about less activity; it is about deeper connection to the One who carries your burdens and steadies your heart.

From that place of rest, you can make wiser decisions about your commitments. You can say yes and no with greater clarity. You can release the need to be everything to everyone and remember that you are not the Savior of your workplace or your family. Christ is.

Reflection Questions:

  1. Where do you feel most “heavy laden” in trying to balance work and life?

  2. How often do you come to Jesus with that burden, rather than just trying harder?

  3. What is one small, concrete step you can take to create healthier rhythms with Him at the center?

Prayer

Jesus, I am tired of trying to carry everything alone. I come to You for rest. Teach me how to walk with You in my work, my home, and my responsibilities. Help me build rhythms that honor You and protect my heart. Amen.
