The Temptation to Bad-Mouth Competitors [Commercial Broker #45]

The Temptation to Bad-Mouth Competitors [Commercial Broker #45]

Scripture: “Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up…” — Ephesians 4:29 (ESV)

Devotional

In a competitive industry, you will encounter other brokers whose tactics you disagree with—or whose success stirs up envy. The easiest response is to criticize them behind their backs, subtly undermining their reputation to prospects or colleagues. It can feel justified, even strategic.

But Scripture is clear: corrupting talk—words that damage rather than build up—is out of bounds for followers of Christ. This doesn’t mean you ignore real ethical issues; it means you address them with appropriate parties, in appropriate ways, rather than gossiping or slandering.

Refusing to bad-mouth others—even when they’ve wronged you—sets you apart. It demonstrates a quiet confidence in God’s justice and a refusal to weaponize your words. You can highlight your strengths without attacking others’ weaknesses. You can warn appropriately without poisoning atmospheres with contempt.

Reflection Questions:

·       Do I ever use conversations with clients or colleagues to subtly tear down other brokers?

·       What would it look like to honor Christ in how I speak about competitors, even difficult ones?

Prayer

Jesus, put a guard over my mouth. Help me use my words to build up, not tear down. When I’m tempted to criticize others, remind me that my reputation is in Your hands, not theirs. Amen.
