Advocates in the Image of Christ [Attorney #2]

Scripture: “But if anyone does sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous.” — 1 John 2:1 (ESV)

Devotional

In your professional identity, you are an advocate—one who stands on behalf of another, gives voice to the voiceless, and contends for justice. That identity isn’t merely a legal role—it reflects something eternal. Jesus Christ is called our Advocate. He intercedes on our behalf, not just in a courtroom, but before the very throne of God.

This truth dignifies the role of advocacy. It reminds you that standing with and for others is not only permissible for a Christian—it is Christlike. As an attorney, every time you defend the vulnerable, counsel the confused, or speak truth amidst falsehood, you are mirroring the One who pleads for your soul.

But Christ’s advocacy was never self-serving. He did not manipulate the law for gain or spin the facts to protect Himself. He stood in truth, even unto death. Let His model shape how you advocate today—with clarity, courage, and deep compassion.

Be careful not to idolize the role or weaponize your knowledge. Advocacy without humility breeds pride. But when you serve clients not as an elite expert, but as a faithful servant, your legal skill becomes a vessel of grace.

Reflection Questions:

  1. How does your view of Christ as Advocate shape the way you advocate for others?

  2. In what ways can you model both truth and grace in your legal counsel?

  3. Is there a client or case where you need to shift from self-promotion to Christlike service?

Prayer

Lord Jesus, You are my Advocate and my model. Help me advocate with integrity and grace. May I serve my clients not for glory, but for Your honor.
