Experienced developers learn that the quality of a decision often depends on the quality of the questions asked beforehand.
“What is the return?” matters.
But it is rarely enough.
What assumptions make that return possible?
What happens if rents are lower?
What happens if costs rise?
Who bears the downside?
What does the community actually need?
Why is the seller selling?
What problem are we really solving?
What are we assuming that may not be true?
Wisdom goes beneath the surface.
Jesus frequently used questions to reveal motives, expose assumptions, and lead people toward deeper understanding. His example reminds us that good questions create space for truth.
Developers are often rewarded for having answers. But wise leadership also requires curiosity.
The moment you assume you already understand the situation is often the moment your learning stops.
Ask questions of your consultants.
Ask questions of your partners.
Ask questions of residents and municipal leaders.
Ask questions of yourself.
And ask God to reveal what you have not thought to ask.
Sometimes the most valuable insight in a multimillion-dollar decision begins with five simple words:
“What are we missing here?”

• Who might have insight I have not yet sought?
Action Step
Before your next important meeting, write down five questions designed to uncover assumptions rather than confirm your existing position.

Lord, make me curious, humble, and discerning. Teach me to ask questions that uncover truth and help me understand situations more clearly before making decisions. Amen.
