Asking the Right Questions [Accountant #162]

Good accountants do more than find answers. They know how to ask good questions.
Numbers rarely tell the entire story by themselves. Understanding what is happening often requires looking beneath the surface, asking thoughtful questions, and listening carefully to the answers.
A financial variance may reveal an operational problem. An unusual transaction may expose a weakness in a process. A client's question may point toward a concern they have not fully expressed. Wisdom requires curiosity rather than assumption.
Jesus frequently used questions to help people think more deeply. His questions uncovered motives, clarified beliefs, and invited reflection.
There is wisdom in that approach for your work as well.
Instead of immediately assuming you understand a situation, slow down long enough to investigate. Ask what changed. Ask why it changed. Ask what assumptions are being made. Ask whether there is information you have not yet considered.
Thoughtful questions also communicate humility. They demonstrate that your goal is understanding rather than simply proving that you already know the answer.
In accounting, careful inquiry can prevent errors, uncover opportunities, strengthen decisions, and protect organizations from unnecessary risk.
Sometimes wisdom begins not with having the right answer, but with having the humility to ask the right question.

During one discussion today, intentionally ask an additional thoughtful question before offering your conclusion.
Prayer
Father, give me wisdom to ask thoughtful questions and patience to listen carefully. Help me seek understanding rather than relying too quickly on assumptions. Amen.
