Becoming a Trusted Counselor [Accountant #187]
Listen to today's devotional:
Scripture
“Plans are established by seeking advice.” — Proverbs 20:18.
Devotional
Accountants are often asked for more than numbers. People seek perspective because they trust your ability to interpret information, recognize patterns, and identify consequences that may not be immediately obvious. A business owner may want to understand what financial results really mean. Leadership may need help evaluating alternatives. A client may be uncertain about a difficult decision. Your expertise places you in conversations where your judgment can influence important choices.
That influence makes trust especially significant. Being a trusted counselor does not mean always having an immediate answer. Sometimes the wisest response is to listen carefully, gather more information, acknowledge uncertainty, or recommend that another professional be consulted. Trust grows when people recognize that your advice is not driven by ego, convenience, or personal gain, but by a sincere desire to help them make wise decisions.
A Christian accountant should desire not merely to sound knowledgeable, but to offer counsel that is truthful, thoughtful, and genuinely beneficial. Scripture repeatedly emphasizes the value of wise counsel because good decisions are strengthened by perspective. Your role may allow you to provide some of that perspective, but it should always be offered humbly.
People may remember your advice long after they forget the numbers surrounding it. Let your counsel be marked by wisdom, integrity, patience, and a sincere concern for the people you serve.
