Being a Safe Place for Honest Questions [Commercial Broker #66]

Being a Safe Place for Honest Questions [Commercial Broker #66]

Scripture

“A wise man listens to advice.” — Proverbs 12:15 (ESV)

Devotional

Clients often feel pressure to appear confident and in control, even when they’re uncertain. If they sense you’ll judge or belittle them for not understanding a concept, they’ll stay silent and pretend. But when you create a safe space for questions, you serve them with humility and wisdom.

Being a safe advisor means welcoming questions about terms, risks, and strategies without condescension. It means responding, “That’s a great question,” not, “You should already know this.” It means explaining complex concepts simply, without making people feel small.

This posture invites honesty. Clients are more likely to tell you when they’re confused, anxious, or unsure—giving you the opportunity to guide them well. In a world of ego and posturing, humility and safety stand out.

Reflection Questions

Do people feel comfortable admitting confusion or asking “basic” questions around me?

How can I communicate expertise with humility instead of superiority?

Prayer

Jesus, You welcomed sincere questions and never shamed those who didn’t understand. Help me cultivate that same spirit so clients feel safe to be honest with me. Amen.
