Choosing Kindness Over Cynicism [TDPOW #176]
Scripture
Ephesians 4:32 — “Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you.”
Devotional
Cynicism can creep into the workplace over time—broken promises, failed initiatives, disappointing leaders, and difficult coworkers can make kindness feel naïve. You may think, Why bother? People will just take advantage. Yet Paul calls believers to be kind and tenderhearted, not hard and jaded.
Kindness is not weakness; it’s Christlikeness. It’s choosing gentle words when sarcasm would be easier, offering help instead of indifference, and seeing people as more than their flaws. It flows from remembering how God in Christ has treated you—with astonishing kindness and mercy.
You can’t control whether others “deserve” kindness, but you can choose the spirit you bring into the room. In a cynical culture, steady kindness stands out. It softens edges, invites trust, and brings a taste of God’s heart into ordinary interactions.

Prayer
Lord, guard my heart from cynicism. Soften me with a fresh awareness of Your kindness toward me. Make me tenderhearted in a hard world, and help me treat others as You have treated me in Christ. Amen.
