Choosing Peace Without Avoiding Conflict [Attorney #174]

Scripture

“If possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all.” — Romans 12:18

Devotional

Being a peacemaker does not mean avoiding difficult conversations. Attorneys understand that some conflicts must be addressed directly. Important issues cannot always be resolved by ignoring disagreement or hoping tension disappears. Biblical peace is stronger than avoidance because it enters conflict with the goal of resolution rather than domination.

You may need to challenge someone’s position, establish boundaries, deliver difficult counsel, or pursue formal legal remedies. None of those actions are inconsistent with peace when they are carried out with truth, restraint, and respect. Peace means speaking honestly without unnecessary hostility and listening carefully enough to understand the real issue beneath the conflict.

Paul’s instruction is realistic: “so far as it depends on you.” You cannot control whether another person chooses peace, but you can control whether your own conduct contributes unnecessarily to hostility. A Christian attorney can be firm without becoming combative. Your goal is not the absence of disagreement; it is faithfulness within disagreement.

Reflection Questions

• Do I tend to avoid conflict or escalate it unnecessarily?

• What would faithful peacemaking look like in a current disagreement?

Action Step

Approach one unresolved conflict with the deliberate goal of bringing greater clarity, respect, and peace to the conversation.

Prayer

Lord, make me a peacemaker without making me afraid of difficult conversations. Give me courage, wisdom, restraint, and grace in conflict. Amen.
