Scripture: “Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others.” — Philippians 2:4 (ESV)
Devotional
In a client-driven industry, there’s a subtle temptation to view people through a transactional lens. Billable hours, signed contracts, deadlines, and deliverables can make clients feel more like line items than human beings. But Scripture calls us to a better vision—one that sees clients not as commodities, but as souls.
Jesus never reduced people to problems. He looked beyond their needs and saw their stories. He listened. He wept. He served without seeking return. That same mindset—others-focused, Spirit-filled—is what should mark your legal practice. When you counsel a client, you are not just managing a case. You are stewarding trust. You are entering into a story of pain, hope, fear, or opportunity. And how you treat that person—whether they’re difficult, demanding, or distressed—matters deeply to God.
Philippians 2:4 invites you to lift your gaze from performance metrics and turn your heart toward compassion. Yes, you must protect your time and manage your practice well. But never forget: people are not means to an end. They are the mission.
Serving your client well may not always mean giving them what they want—but it always means treating them with dignity, truth, and care. Let your professionalism be warmed by empathy. Let your counsel be shaped by love. In doing so, you turn everyday legal practice into a sacred act of service.
Reflection Questions:
Do you ever struggle to see clients as people rather than cases or revenue?
How might empathy improve—not weaken—your legal effectiveness?
Is there a client you need to begin viewing through the lens of Christ today?
Prayer
Lord, help me see every client as You see them—not as a task to complete, but as a person to love. Let my service reflect Your heart, and my practice reflect Your Kingdom.
