Conflicts of Interest and a Clear Conscience [Commercial Broker #37]

Conflicts of Interest and a Clear Conscience [Commercial Broker #37]

Scripture: “So I always take pains to have a clear conscience toward both God and man.” — Acts 24:16 (ESV)

Devotional

Conflicts of interest are part of commercial real estate—dual agency situations, representing multiple tenants in the same submarket, or advising both buyers and sellers in overlapping circles. Sometimes the law allows it, but the deeper question is: what protects trust and honors God?

A clear conscience doesn’t mean you avoid every complex situation; it means you handle them with radical transparency. You disclose relationships, explain potential conflicts, and give clients the information they need to make informed choices. You refuse to quietly tilt the table in your favor while pretending neutrality.

A clouded conscience makes you defensive and anxious. A clear conscience gives you peace, knowing you’ve been honest before both God and people. In every potential conflict, your aim should be not “What can I technically do?” but “What allows me to look God and my client in the eye without shame?”

Reflection Questions:

·       Are there any relationships or deals right now where my conscience feels unsettled?

·       What steps of disclosure or clarification would bring greater integrity to those situations?

Prayer

Holy Spirit, search my heart. Show me any area where my conscience is clouded by divided interests, and give me courage to pursue clarity, fairness, and honesty. Amen.
