Scripture: “The integrity of the upright guides them, but the crookedness of the treacherous destroys them.” — Proverbs 11:3 (ESV)
Devotional
Every attorney is, in essence, a counselor. Clients come to you seeking wisdom—legal, strategic, and personal. In those moments, you hold influence. Your advice can alter trajectories, shape decisions, and impact lives. But the counsel you offer must do more than advance a case—it must reflect Christ.
The pressure to compromise is subtle. A client wants to “massage the truth.” A legal loophole could achieve the goal—at the cost of ethical clarity. A gray area tempts you with success but clouds your conscience. But Scripture is clear: integrity must guide your counsel.
To be an upright counselor is to say what is right, even when it’s not what your client wants to hear. It is to speak truth in love—not out of fear, but out of conviction. It’s to pursue outcomes that honor God, not just outcomes that satisfy clients.
Integrity in counsel doesn’t mean you are inflexible or naive. It means your wisdom is anchored in God’s truth, not in self-preservation or popularity. It means you're willing to walk away from business rather than walk into compromise. It means you care more about eternal faithfulness than temporary gain.
Your clients may not always thank you for godly counsel. But long after the case closes, your integrity will remain. And God will see.
Reflection Questions:
Have you ever been pressured to offer counsel that conflicted with your convictions?
How can you balance professional strategy with spiritual integrity?
In what ways can you pray over the advice you give before you give it?
Prayer
Lord, let my words be guided by Your truth, not by fear or gain. Give me the courage to speak what is right, and the wisdom to counsel with love. Use my influence to bring clarity, peace, and righteousness.
