Counting the Cost [Real Estate Dev #18]

Scripture: “For which of you, desiring to build a tower, does not first sit down and count the cost, whether he has enough to complete it?” — Luke 14:28 (ESV)

Devotional

Cost estimating is second nature for a developer. Before a single dollar is spent or a permit is filed, due diligence demands clarity: What will it take to bring this vision to life? Jesus used this same principle to describe the spiritual life, reminding His followers that true discipleship also requires foresight, honesty, and commitment. Just as a developer counts the cost before building, so must the believer weigh what it means to follow Christ in every area—including the workplace.

There is a cost to building with integrity. You may lose deals, face delays, or turn away from opportunities others are quick to seize. There’s a cost to prioritizing people over profit, to honoring God in every line item, and to choosing transparency when others take shortcuts. But there is also a cost to compromise: fractured witness, restless conscience, and spiritual drift. Counting the cost is not just about loss—it’s about clarity. What is truly worth building?

Jesus was not warning against ambition, but against blind ambition. He wasn’t discouraging bold projects or great vision, but reminding us that anything lasting must be grounded in truth. When you sit down to plan a development, you know that overages, delays, and surprises are likely. In the same way, when you commit to build your career on Christ, you can expect testing, stretching, and refinement. The key is to build with your eyes wide open—and your heart fully surrendered.

Today, don’t rush forward on momentum alone. Pause and count the cost of faithful development—not only financially, but spiritually and relationally. What will it require to honor God through this next project, conversation, or decision? The path of faithfulness may be costly, but it leads to a reward the world cannot match.

Reflection Questions:

  • Where am I being invited to slow down and count the cost?

  • Have I weighed the long-term consequences of spiritual compromise?

  • What would it look like to choose the faithful path, even if it costs more?

Prayer

Lord, teach me to count the cost rightly—not only in dollars, but in discipleship. Help me choose what honors You, even when it requires sacrifice. Give me wisdom, clarity, and courage to build faithfully. Amen.
