Delays with a Purpose [Real Estate Dev #20]

Scripture: “The heart of man plans his way, but the Lord establishes his steps.” — Proverbs 16:9 (ESV)

Devotional

Every developer knows the frustration of delays. A stalled permit, a financing setback, a surprise environmental review—these moments feel like detours from progress, interruptions to your well-laid plans. Yet Scripture reminds us that while planning is wise and necessary, it is God who ultimately establishes the path forward. Proverbs 16:9 does not condemn planning—it simply repositions control. Delays may feel disruptive, but they are never outside of God’s sovereign hand.

When you encounter delay, the immediate impulse is often to fix, push, or force a resolution. But God may be using the pause to do something deeper—within the project or within you. Delays expose motives, test trust, and clarify direction. They offer space to reassess: Is this project aligned with God’s purposes? Have I been rushing ahead out of ambition or anxiety? Sometimes, what appears to be a hold-up is actually divine protection or preparation.

God’s timing rarely matches our timelines, especially in the world of development, where urgency often drives decisions. But His timing is always wise. He sees what you cannot—market shifts, internal dynamics, spiritual lessons, unseen risks. The delay you resent today may be the very thing that prevents greater damage tomorrow. When you trust that God establishes your steps, you can respond to delays not with panic, but with prayerful patience.

This doesn’t mean you become passive or disengaged. You still steward, still lead, still plan. But your posture shifts from control to trust. Delays become opportunities to lean into God’s presence, recalibrate your heart, and walk in step with His pace. As you wait, you are not doing nothing—you are being formed.

Reflection Questions:

  • How have I typically responded to delays in past projects?

  • What might God be teaching me through a current pause or setback?

  • How can I surrender control without giving up faithful stewardship?

Prayer

Lord, I confess that delays often frustrate me. Teach me to trust that You are working even in the waiting. Help me respond with faith, patience, and a willingness to be shaped by Your timing. Amen.
