“The wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, open to reason…” — James 3:17
Devotional
Negotiation is a regular part of development. Land purchases, lease terms, financing agreements, construction contracts, and partnerships all require careful discussion and decision-making.
In these moments, wisdom matters deeply.
It can be tempting to approach negotiation primarily as a competition to win. But biblical wisdom approaches negotiation differently. It values truth, fairness, peace, and long-term relationships—not just leverage and advantage.
James 3:17 describes wisdom as pure, peaceable, gentle, and open to reason. These qualities do not weaken negotiation; they strengthen it by creating trust and clarity.
Wise negotiation seeks outcomes that are sustainable and honorable for everyone involved. It avoids manipulation, hidden motives, and unnecessary hostility. It also recognizes that preserving integrity is more valuable than securing a temporary advantage.
This does not mean avoiding firmness or difficult conversations. Strong negotiation still requires clarity, preparation, and confidence. But it is guided by character rather than ego.
As a Christian developer, the way you negotiate should reflect the character of Christ. Your integrity, honesty, and fairness may speak louder than any words about your faith ever could.
God can use even business negotiations as opportunities to reflect His wisdom and righteousness.
Reflection Questions
What usually motivates my approach to negotiation?
Do my negotiation practices reflect integrity and fairness?
How can I pursue strong outcomes while still honoring others?
Action Step
In your next negotiation or difficult discussion, intentionally focus on clarity, fairness, and long-term relationship health rather than simply “winning.”
Prayer
Lord, guide me in every negotiation and conversation. Help me pursue truth, fairness, and wisdom while reflecting Your character in the way I lead. Amen.
