Not every opportunity is meant to be pursued.
In development, new opportunities constantly appear—land deals, partnerships, acquisitions, expansions, investments. Some seem exciting and profitable at first glance. But wise leadership requires discernment, not just ambition.
It is possible to become so focused on growth that you begin saying “yes” too quickly. Yet every opportunity carries costs: time, energy, focus, capital, and responsibility. Saying yes to one thing often means saying no to something else.
Discernment asks deeper questions:
Does this align with God’s direction?
Will this strengthen or strain my stewardship?
Am I pursuing this from wisdom or from fear of missing out?
Ephesians 5 calls believers to walk carefully and wisely. This means approaching opportunities prayerfully rather than impulsively.
Sometimes the most spiritually mature decision is declining an opportunity that appears attractive externally but creates unnecessary distraction or compromise internally.
God does not require you to pursue every possibility. He calls you to faithful stewardship of the opportunities He truly intends for you.
Wisdom helps you recognize the difference.
Reflection Questions
Am I evaluating opportunities carefully or reacting impulsively?
What motivates my decision-making when new opportunities arise?
Is there an opportunity I need to reconsider prayerfully?
Action Step
Before pursuing a new opportunity, take time to evaluate not only its potential benefits but also its impact on your priorities, stewardship, and relationships.
Prayer
Lord, give me discernment in every opportunity before me. Help me walk wisely, pursue what honors You, and resist distractions that pull me away from faithful stewardship. Amen.
