Envy in the Workplace [TDPOW #71]

Scripture: James 3:16 — “For where jealousy and selfish ambition exist, there will be disorder and every vile practice.”

Devotional

Watching others advance faster, receive more recognition, or enjoy opportunities you long for can stir up envy. You may find yourself resenting their success, comparing constantly, or quietly rooting for them to fail. Left unchecked, envy poisons your heart and relationships.

James warns that jealousy and selfish ambition produce “disorder” and many harmful behaviors. Envy doesn’t stay hidden; it seeps into conversations, decisions, and attitudes. But as a follower of Christ, you are called to a different way—to rejoice with those who rejoice and trust God’s unique path for you.

The antidote to envy is gratitude and trust. Gratitude for what God has given you, and trust that He knows what is best for your journey. When you remember that your worth and future are in His hands, you are free to celebrate others instead of competing with them.

Reflection Questions:

  1. Who are you most tempted to envy at work, and why?

  2. How has envy affected your attitude or relationships?

  3. What truths about God’s provision and your identity in Christ can help you fight envy?

Prayer

Lord, expose and uproot envy in my heart. Forgive me for resenting others’ blessings. Teach me to trust Your plan for my life and to genuinely celebrate the good You do in others’ lives. Amen.
