Evaluating the Influence You Are Becoming [Attorney #180]

Scripture

“Keep a close watch on yourself and on the teaching.” — 1 Timothy 4:16

Devotional

Influence develops gradually. Every conversation, decision, habit, and response contributes to the kind of professional you are becoming. Because the process is gradual, it is easy to overlook. You may spend considerable time evaluating cases, strategies, finances, and professional goals while rarely evaluating your own spiritual and character development.

Scripture encourages you to watch yourself carefully. Ask difficult questions. Are you becoming more patient or more irritable? More generous or more self-focused? More humble or more impressed with your own expertise? More compassionate or more cynical? Professional experience should deepen more than your knowledge; it should also mature your character.

God cares deeply about what your career is producing within you. Achievement without spiritual growth is incomplete success. Periodically examining your heart allows you to recognize drift before it becomes deeply established. It also helps you notice areas where God has already produced meaningful growth. Do not merely ask where your career is going. Ask who you are becoming along the way.

Reflection Questions

• How has my character changed through my professional experiences?

• What quality does God seem to be developing in me right now?

Action Step

Spend ten quiet minutes evaluating the person you are becoming through your work and identify one area where you want God to continue transforming you.

Prayer

Father, shape my character through every season of my career. Help me become increasingly humble, wise, compassionate, faithful, and Christlike. Amen.
