Scripture: “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters.”—Colossians 3:23 (NIV)
Devotional
What if your spreadsheets were an offering? What if the time you spent reconciling accounts or preparing reports was an act of worship?
In the busyness of your work, it’s easy to forget that excellence isn’t just about getting ahead—it’s about glorifying God. As Christians, we are not called to mediocrity. We’re called to bring our very best—not for applause or promotion, but because our ultimate audience is the Lord.
Colossians 3:23 reminds us that in whatever we do—whether drafting financial statements or responding to a client email—we’re to work with all our heart, as unto God Himself. That transforms the way we approach even the most routine task. Suddenly, accuracy matters not just because it’s required—but because it reflects God’s own excellence and order.
Excellence isn’t the same as perfectionism. Perfectionism demands flawlessness for self-worth or approval. Excellence, however, is about honoring God by doing your work diligently, intentionally, and with care. And it’s sustainable—because it’s motivated by worship, not anxiety.
Your work is an act of devotion. Every time you go the extra mile to verify the numbers, communicate clearly, or finish what you start, you’re offering something pleasing to the Lord. That’s the kind of work that leaves a mark—not just in ledgers, but in eternity.
Reflection Questions
Do I view my work tasks—even the small ones—as opportunities to worship?
Am I pursuing excellence with humility, or striving for perfection to earn approval?
What’s one area of my work where I could reflect God’s excellence more intentionally this week?
Prayer
Lord, I want my work to honor You. Teach me to pursue excellence not for praise, but as an act of love and worship. Help me work with integrity, focus, and joy—remembering that You see every task, and nothing done for You is ever wasted. Amen.
