Growing in Excellence Without Losing Your Soul [Accountant #185]
Listen to today's devotional:
Scripture
“What good is it for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul?” — Mark 8:36.
Devotional
Professional growth is good. Developing expertise, earning credentials, accepting greater responsibility, and pursuing excellence can all be faithful expressions of stewardship.
But even good ambitions can become dangerous when they consume everything else.
Accounting can reward long hours, constant availability, technical mastery, and relentless productivity. Over time, it is possible to become increasingly successful professionally while becoming increasingly depleted spiritually.
Jesus reminds you that no achievement is worth losing what matters most.
Your career is part of your calling, but it is not the entirety of your life. You are also called to love God, care for relationships, cultivate character, serve others, rest, worship, and remain spiritually healthy.
True excellence therefore requires integration.
You should become better at your profession without becoming less attentive to God. Greater responsibility should deepen your dependence upon Him rather than gradually crowd Him out.
There may be seasons requiring unusual sacrifice and long hours. But temporary demands should not quietly become permanent patterns that leave no room for spiritual renewal.
The goal is not simply to become an excellent accountant.
The deeper goal is to become a faithful follower of Christ who practices accounting with excellence.
Keep that order clear.
Your profession is something you steward. Your soul is something you guard.
