Scripture: “A false balance is an abomination to the Lord, but a just weight is His delight.” — Proverbs 11:1 (ESV)
Devotional
Numbers are the language of commercial real estate—NOI, cap rates, IRR, rent rolls, vacancy assumptions, TI allowances, and expense reimbursements. Yet numbers can be twisted, padded, and selectively presented to make a property look stronger than it truly is. Scripture speaks directly to this: false measurements are an abomination to God.
You may never hold a literal scale, but every time you prepare a financial package, adjust underwriting, or present projections, you are weighing what is true against what is tempting. Will you present conservative, honest assumptions that protect your client—or overly optimistic ones that flatter the deal and move it faster?
Honest numbers are holy ground because they reflect God’s love for truth and justice. They show that you value people over profit—investors who trust your analysis, tenants who sign long leases, landlords who rely on your counsel. When you handle numbers with integrity, you’re not just protecting reputations—you’re protecting real people from real harm.
Reflection Questions:
· Are there any areas in my underwriting or marketing where I routinely lean toward overly aggressive assumptions?
· How can I build systems or habits that help keep my financial representations honest and fair?
Prayer
Father, You delight in just weights and honest measures. Help me handle every pro forma and financial statement with integrity, guarding my heart from the temptation to manipulate numbers. Amen.
