Romans 13:1 — “For there is no authority except from God, and those that exist have been instituted by God.”
Devotional
Authority at work—managers, directors, executives—can be a source of blessing or frustration. You won’t always agree with their decisions. Some may lead well; others may be inconsistent or short-sighted. Yet Scripture reminds you that all authority is ultimately under God’s hand.
Honoring authority doesn’t mean you blindly agree with everything or never raise concerns. It means you choose respect in your words, tone, and attitudes. You follow lawful, ethical directives, do your work faithfully, and address disagreements through appropriate channels—not through gossip, slander, or quiet sabotage.
When you honor imperfect leaders, you demonstrate trust in a perfect God. You’re saying, Lord, I believe You are over this authority, and I will honor You in how I respond. In the long run, that posture protects your heart and often opens unexpected doors of influence.
Reflection Questions
How do you typically react inside when you disagree with leadership decisions?
Have your words about your leaders—public or private—reflected honor or disrespect?
What would it look like to disagree respectfully, trusting God’s sovereignty over authority?
Prayer
Father, You are Lord over all authority. Help me honor those You’ve placed over me at work, even when I don’t agree. Give me wisdom to address issues rightly and a heart that reflects trust in Your ultimate rule. Amen.
