Integrity in the Shadows [Commercial Broker #31]

Scripture: “The integrity of the upright guides them, but the crookedness of the treacherous destroys them.” — Proverbs 11:3 (ESV)

Devotional

The most defining moments of your character rarely happen in a boardroom. They happen in the shadows—when you’re alone with a spreadsheet, drafting an LOI, structuring a commission, or deciding what to disclose in an offering memorandum. No one is standing over your shoulder. Yet heaven is watching.

Commercial real estate is filled with gray areas: assumptions in pro formas, disclosures in marketing packages, “creative” underwriting, and selective storytelling to make a property more attractive. The world often applauds the broker who is clever enough to stretch reality without technically breaking the rules. But Scripture calls that crookedness, not creativity.

Integrity doesn’t just keep you out of legal trouble—it keeps you aligned with God. It becomes your internal compass when deals get complicated and competing interests collide. It whispers, “Tell the truth. Don’t hide that detail. Don’t overpromise. Don’t mislead.” That guidance may cost you a win today, but it protects your soul and preserves your witness.

You are not just representing properties. You are representing Christ in how you handle the truth.

Reflection Questions:

·       Where am I most tempted to “shade” the truth or leave out important details?

·       What would it look like to let integrity, not pressure, be my guide in those moments?

Prayer

Lord, let integrity be my compass in every unseen decision. When I am tempted to compromise for gain, remind me that Your approval is worth more than any deal. Amen.
