Leading People, Not Just Performance [Banker #139]
Listen to today's devotional:
Scripture
“Whoever would be great among you must be your servant.” — Matthew 20:26.
Devotional
Banking leaders are responsible for performance. Goals matter. Profitability matters. Risk management matters. Operational excellence matters.
But leadership is ultimately about people.
Jesus completely redefined greatness by connecting leadership with service. Authority was not given merely to produce outcomes; it was entrusted for the benefit of others.
A Christian leader therefore asks more than, “Are we hitting our numbers?” You also ask, “Are the people around me growing? Do they feel respected? Am I developing their abilities? Does our culture encourage integrity? Are people becoming stronger because of my leadership?”
Servant leadership does not eliminate accountability. Jesus was both compassionate and truthful. Healthy leaders establish expectations, address problems, and make difficult decisions.
The difference is the motive.
You are not using people to accomplish your goals. You are accomplishing goals while stewarding people God has entrusted to your influence.
Years from now, employees may forget specific quarterly numbers. They are far more likely to remember how you treated them during difficult seasons and whether you helped them grow.
Lead performance well—but never forget the people producing it.
Reflection Questions
• Do I sometimes value performance more than the people responsible for it?
• How are people growing under my leadership?
• What would servant leadership look like for me today?
