Leading Through Example [Attorney #178]

Scripture

“Show yourself in all respects to be a model of good works.” — Titus 2:7

Devotional

Leadership is communicated through example long before it is communicated through instruction. You may tell others to be prepared, ethical, respectful, responsive, and diligent, but your own behavior determines whether those expectations carry credibility.

People notice what leaders tolerate in themselves. If you demand punctuality but regularly arrive late, the inconsistency speaks. If you emphasize integrity but bend standards when convenient, people notice. If you expect respectful communication while treating others harshly, your example undermines your words. Christian leadership begins with personal consistency.

This does not require perfection. Good leaders acknowledge mistakes and correct them openly. What matters is that your conduct increasingly aligns with the standards you encourage in others. Your example creates permission. When you remain calm under pressure, others learn calmness. When you admit mistakes, others learn accountability. When you treat everyone respectfully, you help establish a culture of dignity. Leadership is not simply telling others what good work looks like; it is showing them.

Reflection Questions

• Does my behavior reinforce the standards I expect from others?

• What are people learning about leadership by watching me?

Action Step

Identify one expectation you regularly place on others and examine whether you are consistently modeling it yourself.

Prayer

Father, help me lead through example. Let my actions reinforce my words and give me humility to correct the areas where they do not. Amen.
