Letting Your Reputation Follow Your Character [Attorney #176]

Scripture

“A good name is to be chosen rather than great riches.” — Proverbs 22:1

Devotional

Reputation matters in the legal profession. Clients consider it, colleagues discuss it, judges notice it, and employers evaluate it. A strong professional reputation can take years to build and only moments to damage. Yet Scripture encourages you to focus on something even deeper than reputation: character.

Reputation is what people believe about you; character is who you actually are. If you focus primarily on managing appearances, you may become tempted to hide weaknesses, exaggerate accomplishments, or protect your image at all costs. But when you focus on character, reputation becomes the natural result of consistent faithfulness.

Tell the truth. Keep commitments. Prepare thoroughly. Admit mistakes. Treat people respectfully. Remain ethical when compromise would be easier. Over time, those choices create a good name. You cannot control every person’s opinion of you, and misunderstandings or criticism will occasionally occur regardless of your integrity. Your responsibility is not to control your reputation but to maintain your character.

Reflection Questions

• Am I more concerned about appearing trustworthy or actually being trustworthy?

• What qualities do I want people to consistently experience when working with me?

Action Step

Choose one character quality—honesty, reliability, humility, patience, or diligence—and intentionally practice it throughout your work today.

Prayer

Father, help me build character rather than merely manage appearances. Let my reputation grow naturally from a life of integrity and faithfulness. Amen.
