Scripture
“Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak.” — James 1:19
Devotional
In many cases, the most powerful thing you can do for someone is not to speak—but to listen.
Listening is often overlooked, yet it is one of the most meaningful ways to serve others. When you listen well, you communicate value, respect, and care. You create space for others to be heard and understood.
In the workplace, conversations can easily become transactional—focused on tasks and outcomes. But when you take time to truly listen, you begin to see the person behind the role.
Listening also prepares you for meaningful response. When you understand someone’s situation more fully, you can respond with greater wisdom, compassion, and relevance.
Jesus often listened before He spoke. He asked questions. He engaged people personally. In doing so, He demonstrated that listening is a powerful form of ministry.
Today, choose to listen with intention. You may find that it opens doors you didn’t expect.
Reflection Questions
Do I tend to listen fully, or think about my response while others are speaking?
Who in my workplace needs to feel heard right now?
How can listening change the quality of my relationships?
Action Step
In your next conversation, focus entirely on listening—avoid interrupting, ask a follow-up question, and show genuine interest.
Prayer
God, help me to listen well. Give me patience and attentiveness so that I can truly care for others through my presence. Amen.
