“The plans of the diligent lead surely to abundance.” — Proverbs 21:5
Devotional
Managing expectations is a critical part of legal work. Clients often come with assumptions, hopes, or misunderstandings about outcomes, timelines, and possibilities.
Your role is not only to represent them—but to guide them with clarity and realism.
This requires wisdom. Being honest about risks and limitations can be uncomfortable, especially when clients want certainty. But clear expectations build trust, while unrealistic ones lead to frustration.
Wisdom in this area means balancing honesty with encouragement. It means communicating clearly without discouraging unnecessarily. It means helping others understand the process, even when the outcome is uncertain.
When you manage expectations well, you strengthen relationships and reduce conflict. You also reinforce your role as a trusted advisor—not just an advocate.
Clarity at the beginning often prevents complications later.
Reflection Questions
• Do I clearly communicate expectations to clients and colleagues?
• Where might I be avoiding difficult but necessary conversations?
Action Step
In your next client interaction, clearly communicate one expectation regarding timeline, process, or outcome.
Prayer
Father, give me wisdom in guiding others. Help me communicate clearly and honestly in every situation. Amen.
