Measuring Your Career by Faithfulness [Attorney #190]
Listen to today's devotional:
Scripture
“Moreover, it is required of stewards that they be found faithful.” — 1 Corinthians 4:2
Devotional
Every profession has its scorecards. For attorneys, they may include income, billable hours, cases won, clients represented, partnership status, professional recognition, leadership positions, or the size and reputation of a practice. Those measurements have legitimate purposes, but they cannot measure the most important thing.
God’s primary measure is faithfulness. Were you truthful when dishonesty would have been easier? Did you serve people rather than merely use them? Did you pursue justice with humility? Did you remain faithful to your convictions under pressure? Did you use your influence to strengthen others? Did your career draw you closer to Christ or gradually replace Him at the center of your life?
These questions produce a different definition of success. One day your final case will close, someone else will occupy your office, and professional accomplishments that once seemed enormous will gradually fade from memory. But faithfulness carries eternal significance. Build a career you can surrender back to God with gratitude. The greatest professional achievement is not simply being known as an excellent attorney; it is becoming an attorney whom God can call faithful.
Reflection Questions
• What measures am I currently using to define professional success?
• If God evaluated my career primarily by faithfulness, what would I want to change?
Action Step
Write one sentence describing what a faithful legal career would look like for you, and keep it somewhere you can revisit regularly.
Prayer
Father, help me measure my career by faithfulness rather than worldly recognition alone. May my work, character, relationships, and influence ultimately honor You. Amen.
