Not every real estate decision happens in a season of growth. Sometimes you are helping a client downsize, close a location, restructure debt, or sell a long-held asset under pressure. These aren’t just business transitions; they’re emotional ones—filled with grief, disappointment, or even shame.
Empathy means you don’t treat those moments as “just another deal.” You acknowledge the weight: “I know this is a hard step,” “You’ve poured a lot into this place,” “I’m sorry this season turned out this way.” You don’t have to fix their feelings. You simply honor them.
Jesus wept at Lazarus’s tomb even though He knew resurrection was coming. That shows us that entering someone’s sorrow is not a lack of faith; it’s an expression of love. In commercial real estate, your willingness to slow down and sit with a client’s pain—even briefly—can become a powerful witness.
They may forget the exact numbers, but they’ll remember that you cared.
