Practicing Law in the Fear of the Lord [Attorney #29]

Scripture: “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and the knowledge of the Holy One is insight.” — Proverbs 9:10 (ESV)

Devotional

In courtrooms and boardrooms alike, lawyers often fear many things: losing credibility, failing clients, making costly mistakes. But Scripture redirects our fear—toward God. The fear of the Lord is not terror or dread. It is awe, reverence, and the holy recognition of God’s authority over all things—including your legal practice.

This fear is the beginning of wisdom. Not the end of courage, but the foundation of clarity. It anchors your values when pressure rises. It humbles you when your platform grows. It reminds you that though your decisions may carry temporal consequences, they also echo into eternity.

To practice law in the fear of the Lord is to remember whose courtroom ultimately matters. It is to act with integrity when no one is watching. It is to steward your influence as one who will give an account—not just to partners or judges—but to the Judge of all the earth.

And paradoxically, this holy fear brings peace. When you fear God, you need not fear man.

Let the weight of reverence shape every decision you make. Let the holiness of God transform how you view even the most ordinary parts of your day.

Reflection Questions:

  1. What fears currently drive your legal decisions—and are they God-honoring?

  2. How does the fear of the Lord provide perspective in high-stakes situations?

  3. In what ways can you cultivate greater reverence in your professional life?

Prayer

Holy God, teach me to walk in reverent fear—not of man, but of You. Let my awe of Your majesty guide every word, every argument, every decision. Make me wise in Your eyes, not just the world’s.
