Scripture: “Be still before the Lord and wait patiently for him; fret not yourself over the one who prospers in his way…” — Psalm 37:7 (ESV)

Devotional

The legal profession thrives on urgency. Clients expect instant responses. Deadlines press. The inbox never sleeps. In this high-stakes environment, patience can feel like a liability—something to be avoided, not cultivated.

But God’s Word paints a different picture. Psalm 37 urges us to be still before the Lord and to wait patiently for Him. Not just in our personal lives, but also in the pressure of our professions.

Patience is not passivity—it’s the spiritual discipline of trusting God's timing over our own. It’s choosing not to rush a decision when discernment requires more time. It’s holding your tongue in a heated moment. It’s enduring delay or opposition without losing peace or clarity.

For attorneys, patience may look like listening longer to a frustrated client. Or resisting the urge to fire off a defensive email. Or choosing not to measure your worth by how fast you can produce results.

God does not operate on your calendar. His pace is purposeful—even when it feels slow. The question is: Will you trust Him in the tension?

Be still. He’s at work—even when you're waiting.

Reflection Questions:

  1. Where in your practice are you struggling to wait patiently?

  2. How has urgency shaped your habits more than faithfulness?

  3. What would it look like to create stillness in your workday?

Prayer

Lord, in a world of rushing, teach me to wait. Calm my anxious striving. Help me trust that You are moving even when I cannot see it. Shape my soul with holy patience.
