Praying for Discernment Before Every Deal [Commercial Broker #151]
Listen to today's devotional:
Scripture
“Teach me good judgment and knowledge, for I believe in your commandments.” — Psalm 119:66 (ESV)
Devotional
Before you evaluate cap rates, rent rolls, comps, or term sheets, the first step in wise deal-making is prayer. Not a hurried, “Lord, bless this,” but a genuine request for discernment: “Teach me good judgment. Help me see what I cannot see.”
Discernment is the ability to distinguish truth from illusion, wisdom from foolishness, opportunity from temptation. No spreadsheet can give you that. Discernment is a spiritual gift cultivated through humility and dependence on God.
Every deal contains unknowns—financial variables, personalities, unseen risks, hidden motives, and future conditions no one can predict. But none of these are hidden from the Lord. When you pray for discernment, you’re not asking God to magically reveal every detail; you’re asking Him to shape your instincts, align your perspective, protect your heart, and guide your steps.
Many brokers rely on experience, intuition, or market intel alone. You have access to something greater: the wisdom of God Himself. And He promises to give it generously to those who ask.
Reflection Questions
How often do I pause to pray for discernment before analyzing or negotiating a deal?
What deal right now most needs spiritual clarity rather than just technical evaluation?
Prayer
Lord, teach me good judgment. Open my eyes to what I cannot see, and give me wisdom that comes from Your truth, not just my own understanding. Amen.
