Devotional
Most failed projects do not begin with a developer intending to make a bad decision.
Often, warning signs were present.
An unexplained environmental issue. A questionable partner. Aggressive assumptions. An entitlement problem everyone hopes will disappear. A construction budget that seems unrealistically low. A tenant whose credit raises concerns.
The problem is not always the absence of information.
Sometimes it is our unwillingness to accept what the information is telling us.
Opportunity creates emotional momentum. Once you invest time, money, reputation, and energy into a project, confirmation bias can become powerful. You begin looking for reasons to continue rather than objectively evaluating reasons to stop.
Proverbs describes prudence as seeing danger and responding appropriately.
Wisdom does not panic at every potential problem.
But neither does it dismiss legitimate warnings because they interfere with the desired outcome.
Red flags are invitations to investigate.
Ask harder questions.
Test assumptions.
Bring in expertise.
Give dissenting voices permission to speak.
And remain willing to walk away.
One of the greatest demonstrations of wisdom in development is recognizing when continuing forward is no longer courage—it is denial.

• Is there a warning sign in a current project I have been minimizing?
• Do people on my team feel safe raising concerns?
• How does emotional investment affect my objectivity?
Action Step
Ask your team or a trusted adviser to identify the biggest unresolved risk in one current project and listen without defending the project.
Prayer
Lord, give me eyes to recognize legitimate warning signs and humility to respond wisely. Protect me from allowing ambition or emotional investment to blind me to truth. Amen.
