Refusing to Let Conflict Define You [Attorney #193]

Scripture

“Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.” — Romans 12:21

Devotional

When conflict is part of your daily work, it can gradually become part of your personality. Constant exposure to opposition may train you to look for weaknesses, anticipate arguments, question motives, and remain ready to defend your position. Those instincts may be useful professionally, but they can become spiritually unhealthy when they begin shaping every relationship.

You are an attorney, but you are not called to live every moment as an adversary. Christ is forming you into someone characterized by love, patience, humility, and peace even while you work in settings where disagreement is unavoidable. The challenge is learning to engage conflict professionally without allowing conflict to govern your heart.

This may require intentionally leaving the adversarial posture at work. It may mean resisting the urge to turn every disagreement into an argument or remembering that being able to identify flaws in another person’s reasoning does not require you to expose them constantly. It may also mean asking God to restore gentleness after particularly contentious seasons.

Your ability to contend effectively is part of your professional skill. Your ability to remain spiritually tender despite repeated contention is part of your Christian maturity. Do not allow the environment in which you work to determine the person you become.

Reflection Questions

• Has the adversarial nature of legal work affected the way I relate to people outside professional disputes?

• Where might I need God to restore greater gentleness or patience in me?

Action Step

In one disagreement today, resist the instinct to immediately prove your point and first seek to understand the other person’s perspective.

Prayer

Lord, keep conflict from hardening my heart. Help me advocate strongly when necessary while remaining patient, gracious, and shaped by Your Spirit. Amen.
