Remaining Humble as Responsibility Grows [Banker #138]

Scripture

“When pride comes, then comes disgrace, but with the humble is wisdom.” — Proverbs 11:2.

Devotional

Career growth brings opportunity, but it also brings spiritual risk.

As responsibility increases, more people may seek your opinion. Your decisions may carry greater weight. Your title may open doors that were previously closed.

Without intentional humility, success can slowly change the way you see yourself.

You may begin listening less carefully. You may assume experience guarantees wisdom. You may become less receptive to correction or increasingly convinced that your success is primarily self-made.

Scripture repeatedly warns against this progression.

Humility does not mean pretending you lack ability. It means recognizing where your ability came from. Your intelligence, opportunities, relationships, experience, and even the circumstances that allowed you to advance ultimately exist under God's providence.

Humble leaders remain teachable. They ask questions. They admit mistakes. They seek counsel. They give credit. They remember how much they still do not know.

Greater responsibility should produce greater dependence on God, not less.

If God expands your influence, receive it gratefully—but hold it humbly.

The higher you rise professionally, the more intentionally you may need to kneel spiritually.

Reflection Questions

• Has professional success affected my humility?

• Am I as teachable today as I was earlier in my career?

• Where might pride be quietly influencing my leadership?

Action Step

Ask someone you trust for honest feedback about one area of your leadership and receive the response without becoming defensive.

Prayer

Father, keep me humble as responsibility grows. Remind me that every opportunity comes through Your grace and help me remain teachable, grateful, and dependent on You. Amen.
