Scripture
“Give instruction to a wise man, and he will be still wiser; teach a righteous man, and he will increase in learning.” — Proverbs 9:9
Devotional
The legal profession places a high value on expertise. Years of study, experience, and practice sharpen your ability to analyze, argue, and advise. But there is a subtle danger that comes with expertise—the temptation to believe you have less to learn.
Scripture defines wisdom differently. A wise person remains teachable.
Teachable attorneys continue to grow. They listen well. They are open to feedback. They are willing to adjust, refine, and improve. They recognize that no matter how experienced they become, there is always more to learn—both professionally and spiritually.
Pride closes the door to growth. Humility keeps it open.
Remaining teachable also means being receptive to God’s instruction. His Word continues to shape your thinking, your decisions, and your perspective. When you approach your work with humility, you create space for both personal and professional development.
Growth is not automatic—it is intentional. And a teachable spirit is one of the most valuable qualities you can cultivate.
Reflection Questions
• Am I open to feedback, or do I tend to resist it?
• Where do I need to grow or improve right now?
Action Step
Ask a trusted colleague or mentor for one area of improvement and receive their input without defensiveness.
Prayer
Lord, give me a teachable spirit. Help me grow in wisdom, humility, and understanding in every area of my life. Amen.
