Respecting People Who Think Differently [Accountant #193]
Listen to today's devotional:
Scripture
“Honor everyone.” — 1 Peter 2:17.
Devotional
People approach financial decisions differently. Some are highly cautious, while others are comfortable with uncertainty. Some appreciate extensive detail, while others want only the central conclusion. Some naturally value controls and documentation, while others become frustrated by anything that seems to slow progress.
Different does not necessarily mean wrong. Your accounting expertise matters, but other people bring forms of knowledge you may not possess. Operations leaders understand processes from the front lines. Sales professionals understand customer behavior. Managers understand team dynamics. Business owners may carry historical context behind decisions that cannot be captured in a spreadsheet.
Wisdom listens across disciplines. Respect also matters when you genuinely disagree. You can believe someone’s conclusion is mistaken without treating the person dismissively. Christian character should make you more capable of disagreement with dignity, not less.
Every person you encounter is made in the image of God and deserves respect regardless of whether they share your opinions, expertise, personality, or faith. When you consistently demonstrate that respect, you create stronger relationships and become more effective in influencing others toward wise decisions.
Reflection Questions
Which types of people or personalities frustrate me most?
Do I sometimes dismiss perspectives outside my expertise?
How can greater respect improve collaboration?
Action Step
During one disagreement today, intentionally identify something valuable in the other person’s perspective before responding.
Prayer
Father, help me honor people even when we think differently. Give me humility to listen and wisdom to learn from perspectives beyond my own. Amen.
