Responding Instead of Reacting [Attorney #103]

Responding Instead of Reacting [Attorney #103]

Scripture

“A fool gives full vent to his spirit, but a wise man quietly holds it back.” — Proverbs 29:11

Devotional

In high-pressure situations, reactions can be quick—and costly.

An unexpected comment, a difficult client, a challenging negotiation—these moments can trigger immediate emotional responses. But reacting without thinking often leads to regret.

Scripture calls you to something different: restraint.

Responding instead of reacting requires discipline. It means pausing, processing, and choosing your words carefully. It gives you control over your actions rather than allowing circumstances to control you.

In the legal profession, where words carry weight, this discipline is essential. A measured response can de-escalate conflict, preserve relationships, and maintain professionalism.

Wisdom is often demonstrated not by what you say, but by what you choose not to say.

Taking a moment to respond thoughtfully can change the direction of an entire interaction.

Reflection Questions

• In what situations do I tend to react quickly?

• How can I build the habit of pausing before responding?

Action Step

The next time you feel triggered today, pause for a few seconds before speaking and choose your response intentionally.

Prayer

Lord, help me respond with wisdom and self-control. Guide my words and actions in every situation. Amen.
