Scripture: “In peace I will both lie down and sleep; for you alone, O Lord, make me dwell in safety.” — Psalm 4:8 (ESV)
Devotional
The pace of development rarely slows on its own. There is always more to do—emails to answer, meetings to schedule, crises to manage. Rest can feel like a luxury you can't afford or a threat to productivity. But Scripture paints rest not as weakness, but as trust. Psalm 4:8 points to a deep spiritual reality: sleep is not just recovery; it is surrender.
Rest says, “I am not in control.” It acknowledges that your strength is finite and your influence limited. It reminds you that God sustains your projects, protects your team, and secures your future—even while you sleep. Refusing to rest, on the other hand, often signals fear—fear of falling behind, losing momentum, or being seen as less committed.
For the Christian developer, rest is a discipline of faith. It’s woven into creation, commanded in Scripture, and modeled by Christ. You were not created to run endlessly. When you choose to pause, you declare that God’s provision does not depend on your exhaustion.
True rest renews clarity, compassion, and creativity. It allows you to re-engage your work with joy rather than resentment. Honor God by guarding your rest. He is still at work when you are not.
Reflection Questions:
What does my relationship with rest reveal about my trust in God?
Where am I refusing rest out of fear or pride?
How can I build rhythms of rest into my week?
Prayer
Lord, thank You for the gift of rest. Teach me to embrace it not as laziness, but as trust. Help me release control and remember that You sustain all things—even when I stop. Amen.
