Resting in Your Unique Calling [Sunday Edition #24]
Rest & Renew
Scripture
“Peter turned and saw that the disciple whom Jesus loved was following them.... When Peter saw him, he asked, ‘Lord, what about him?’ Jesus answered, ‘If I want him to remain alive until I return, what is that to you? You must follow me.’” John 21:20–22.
Devotional
Peter asked a question many of us still ask:
What about him?
Jesus had just spoken to Peter about his own future. Yet Peter immediately looked toward another disciple and wanted to know what God had planned for him.
Jesus redirected Peter's attention with a simple command: “You must follow me.”
That same invitation can bring tremendous freedom as you prepare for another week.
You do not need to know why someone else's career is moving faster than yours.
You do not need to understand why another person received an opportunity you wanted.
You do not need to measure your accomplishments against someone else's timeline.
You simply need to follow Christ faithfully in the life He has given you.
Comparison makes rest difficult because there will always be someone who appears to have more—more success, more influence, more recognition, more resources, or more opportunities. If your peace depends upon keeping pace with others, you will never truly rest.
But Jesus invites you to take your eyes off everyone else's path and return them to Him.
Your calling is personal.
Your season is purposeful.
Your responsibilities are entrusted to you.
Your timeline belongs to God.
As you rest today, release the need to measure where you are against where someone else appears to be. Thank God for the specific life, abilities, relationships, opportunities, and responsibilities He has given you.
Then enter the coming week with your eyes fixed on Christ.
You do not have to outperform anyone.
You only need to faithfully follow Him.
Reflection Questions
Whose life or career am I most tempted to compare with my own?
What has comparison been doing to my peace and contentment?
Where might God be asking me to stop looking at someone else's path and focus on following Him?
What unique opportunities has God placed before me in this season?
Action Step
Take a break today from any source that regularly fuels unhealthy comparison—whether social media, professional rankings, conversations, or something else. Use that time instead to thank God for five specific ways He has been faithful in your own life.
Prayer
Lord, thank You that You know me personally and have given me a unique calling. Forgive me for looking at the paths of others instead of faithfully following You. Free me from envy, insecurity, pride, and the constant need to compare. Help me rest in the life and season You have given me. As I enter another week, keep my eyes fixed on Christ and help me faithfully steward what You have placed before me. Amen.
