Seeing the Person Behind the Credit Decision [Banker #131]
Listen to today's devotional:
Scripture
“Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others.” — Philippians 2:4.
Devotional
Credit decisions require objective standards. Sound banking depends upon responsible underwriting, risk management, and consistent policies. Compassion does not mean ignoring those responsibilities.
But responsible decisions can still be made with humanity.
Behind every credit request is a person, family, or business with hopes attached to the outcome. A declined request may represent a delayed home purchase, a business expansion that cannot proceed, or a plan that must be reconsidered.
You may not be able to give someone the answer they want, but you can still treat them with dignity.
Explain decisions clearly when appropriate. Avoid making people feel ashamed because of financial difficulties. Help them understand possible next steps. When alternatives exist, point them toward them honestly.
Jesus combined truth and compassion perfectly. He never changed truth simply to make people comfortable, but neither did He use truth carelessly.
Christian banking should reflect that same balance.
Your responsibility is not to approve every request. It is to make sound decisions while remembering that every file represents someone created in God's image.
Policies determine what you can do. Christlike compassion influences how you do it.
Reflection Questions
• Do I ever become so focused on the financial decision that I forget the person affected by it?
• How can I communicate difficult decisions with greater dignity and compassion?
• What does responsible compassion look like in my role?
Action Step
In one difficult client situation, intentionally consider both the sound financial decision and the most respectful way to communicate it.
Prayer
Father, give me wisdom to make responsible decisions and compassion for every person affected by them. Help me balance truth, stewardship, and genuine care. Amen.
