Scripture
“For which of you, desiring to build a tower, does not first sit down and count the cost…?” — Luke 14:28
Devotional
Expansion opportunities can be exciting. New markets, larger developments, additional partnerships, or increased scale often create momentum and optimism. But Jesus reminds us that wise builders count the cost before moving forward.
Growth without careful evaluation can create strain financially, relationally, and spiritually. Wise developers do not expand merely because opportunities exist. They evaluate readiness, capacity, timing, and long-term sustainability.
Counting the cost requires honesty. It means asking difficult questions before committing:
Do we truly have the capacity for this?
Will this expansion strengthen or weaken stewardship?
What pressures or sacrifices will this create?
In development, excitement can sometimes cloud discernment. Momentum itself can become addictive, pushing leaders toward decisions driven more by ambition than wisdom.
God may indeed call you into greater opportunities. But wise stewardship ensures that expansion aligns with His timing and purposes rather than simply feeding personal ambition.
Counting the cost is not fear—it is wisdom. It protects what God has already entrusted to you while helping ensure future growth remains healthy and sustainable.
The strongest foundations are built intentionally, not impulsively.
Reflection Questions
Am I evaluating expansion opportunities carefully and prayerfully?
What costs—financial, relational, or spiritual—need greater consideration?
How do I distinguish wise growth from unhealthy striving?
Action Step
Review one growth opportunity carefully and evaluate not only the upside, but also the long-term responsibilities and pressures it may create.
Prayer
Father, help me pursue growth with wisdom and discernment. Teach me to count the cost carefully and follow Your direction instead of being driven by ambition alone. Amen.
