Serving by Clarifying What “Win-Win” Really Means [Commercial Broker #133]

Scripture

“Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others.” — Philippians 2:4 (ESV)

Devotional

“Win-win” is one of the most overused phrases in business. People say it, but often what they really mean is, “I win big, and you don’t complain too much.” True mutual benefit requires genuinely considering the other party’s good, not just your own.

As a Christian broker, you can help redefine “win-win.” It doesn’t mean everyone gets everything they want, but it does mean looking for outcomes where both sides are treated fairly, honored appropriately, and not left in unnecessary risk or resentment. Sometimes that involves creativity; sometimes it involves compromise.

You can ask each side, “What does a fair outcome look like to you?” Then, as you negotiate, you can help both parties keep those definitions in view, challenging extremes and advocating for reasonable balance.

This doesn’t weaken your advocacy; it strengthens your integrity. You are reflecting the heart of Christ, who calls His people to consider others’ interests alongside their own.

Reflection Questions

When I say “win-win,” do I really mean it—or is it mostly a sales phrase?

How can I help shape more truly balanced outcomes in the deals I’m working on now?

Prayer

Lord, help me seek outcomes that honor all parties involved. Teach me to look beyond my client’s immediate advantage to what is fair, sustainable, and pleasing to You. Amen.
