Scripture
“Hope deferred makes the heart sick, but a desire fulfilled is a tree of life.” — Proverbs 13:12 (ESV)
Devotional
Unrealistic expectations almost always lead to disappointment. If a client thinks their building will lease in thirty days, or that top-dollar offers will flood in, or that negotiations will be painless, they are set up for heartache.
Serving with excellence means managing expectations early: explaining market realities, likely timelines, typical challenges, and potential obstacles. It may feel like you’re damping their enthusiasm, but you’re actually loving them by helping them align hope with reality.
When things go more smoothly than expected, they’re pleasantly surprised. When difficulties arise, they’re not blindsided. Either way, trust grows because you prepared them honestly.
Avoid the temptation to promise best-case scenarios just to win business. God is honored when your words are truthful—even if they’re less exciting up front.
Reflection Questions
Do I ever hesitate to set realistic expectations because I fear losing the assignment?
What key expectations do I need to clarify with current clients before problems arise?
Prayer
Lord, help me wisely shape expectations so my clients are grounded in truth, not fantasy. Give me clarity and courage to communicate what they need to hear, not just what they want to hear. Amen.
