Serving by Protecting Clients from Overconfidence [Commercial Broker #126]
Scripture
“Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall.” — Proverbs 16:18 (ESV)
Devotional
Overconfidence can be as dangerous as fear. A client might be convinced a location can’t fail, a project can’t miss, a market can’t turn. They may lean too heavily on past success and assume the future will look the same. Serving them well means gently challenging this overconfidence with truth.
This isn’t about pessimism; it’s about humility and prudence. You might say, “I’m excited about this too—but let’s stress-test a few scenarios,” or, “Let’s look at what happens if things don’t go exactly as planned.” You’re not trying to kill vision; you’re trying to ground it in reality.
Pride blinds people to risk. Wisdom shines light on blind spots. When you lovingly challenge overconfidence, you’re protecting clients from falls that could have been avoided. You’re also reminding them—implicitly—that ultimate security lies in God, not in any single deal.
Reflection Questions
Do I ever feed client pride because it feels easier than gently challenging it?
Is there a current situation where I need to help a client see risk more clearly?
Prayer
Holy Spirit, give me courage and tact to address overconfidence where I see it. Help me protect clients from pride-driven decisions and point them toward humble wisdom. Amen.
