Serving by Protecting the Relationship, Not Just the Deal [Commercial Broker #138]

Scripture

“If possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all.” — Romans 12:18 (ESV)

Devotional

A deal can succeed but leave a relationship damaged. Harsh emails, impatient demands, or last-minute pressure tactics might get you across the finish line—but they can poison future interactions.

As a Christian broker, you’re called to care about more than this transaction. You’re called to, as far as it depends on you, “live peaceably with all.” That means negotiating firmly but respectfully, addressing conflict directly but kindly, and avoiding tactics that win the moment but wound the relationship.

Sometimes, you will do everything right and relationships will still be strained—that part is out of your control. But you can ask, “When this is over, will I be able to look everyone in the eye without regret?” If yes, you’ve likely protected both the deal and your witness.

One day, the deal will be a file in a drawer. The relationship—and your testimony—may still be in motion.

Reflection Questions

Have I ever “won” a deal but damaged a relationship along the way?

What would it look like to prioritize relational peace in a current tense situation, even while advocating strongly?

Prayer

Lord, help me care about people more than transactions. Show me how to protect relationships, even as I negotiate hard issues, so that my witness for You remains intact. Amen.
