Serving by Separating Issues from Identity [Commercial Broker #137]

Scripture

“A soft answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger.” — Proverbs 15:1 (ESV)

Devotional

In negotiations, it’s easy to take every pushback personally—on both sides. A counteroffer can feel like an insult. A rejected term can feel like rejection of you. When identity gets tangled up with issues, emotions escalate quickly.

You can serve the process by separating people from problems. You might say, “I hear you pushing back on this term; that doesn’t mean you’re against us. Let’s stay focused on the issue.” Or, “We’re wrestling with the structure, not your integrity.” This kind of language lowers defensiveness and makes it easier to keep talking constructively.

A soft answer that distinguishes between the person and the problem can turn away wrath. You’re reminding everyone: “We’re not enemies; we’re partners trying to solve a tough issue from different angles.”

Doing this reflects the way God deals with us—addressing our sin and our decisions, yet never forgetting our value as His creation.

Reflection Questions

Do I take negotiation pushback personally—and respond defensively?

What phrases could I start using to separate people’s worth from the issues we’re debating?

Prayer

Lord, help me respond gently instead of defensively. Teach me to keep people’s dignity separate from the problems we’re working through. Amen.
